There is one holiday that everyone associates with November...Thanksgiving. It's a holiday to celebrate our forefathers and the hardships they went through and to remember all that we are thankful for in our lives. The day brings us a reason to gather around the TV (for football, of course), and more importantly, to gather around the table for some great food.
Thanksgiving has every reason to get top billing when it comes to November holidays, but there are many other special days that get ignored. Here's a list of some obscure (and some well-known) events that also deserve to be celebrated this month.
International Drum Month
I'm not sure what the origin of this celebration is, but it seems like a good excuse to go see a show that features a fantastic live band that has a drummer. Check out Vegas! The Show that showcases the history of entertainment in Las Vegas with singers, dancers and the ever-important drummer.
Peanut Butter Month
Who doesn't love peanut butter? Well, I guess that people allergic to peanuts don't. But if you are one of those people who loves peanut butter, November is the perfect month for you to celebrate and show your affection.
Try these peanut butter dishes: Grilled PBR&J (peanut butter + raspberry jelly grilled between slices of Texas toast) at PBR Rock Bar & Gril,, "What a Cluster" ice cream (peanut butter ice cream with caramel cluster pieces, peanut butter and marshmallow swirl) at Ben & Jerry's, PB Moo'd Smoothie at Jamba, frozen peanut butter yogurt with peanut butter cups at Red Mango Yogurt & Smoothies, good ol' plain peanut butter cups at Sugar Factory
Cookie Monster's Birthday - November 2
I didn't realize that Cookie Monster had a birthday. I wish I would have known because I would have been eating a cookie in his honor on November 2 for years. Now's my chance to get caught up.
Do Cookie Monster proud at Nestle TollHouse Cafe
Sandwich Day - November 3
I don't think you ever need a justification to eat a sandwich, but since there is an official day, you might as well go for it. Almost every restaurant at Miracle Mile Shops has some form of a sandwich (assuming that putting gummy bears between two chocolate bars at Sugar Factory counts as a sandwich).
Sandwiches of every shape and size can be found at: Aromi d'Italia, Blondies Sports Bar & Grill, Cheeseburger Las Vegas, FRESH Grill & Bar, Lobster ME, Lombardi's Romagna Mia, Ocean One Bar & Grille, PBR Rock Bar & Grill
Basketball Day - November 6
There are three NBA games taking place on November 6 and four places at Miracle Mile Shops to watch them. Catch Orlando Magic vs. Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors vs. Oklahoma City Thunder or Detroit Pistons vs. Denver Nuggets. If you prefer, there are many college basketball games to watch that day as well.
Election Day - November 6
This is the most important day of the month. Make sure that you go out and VOTE! Once you have cast your ballot, come to Miracle Mile Shops where we'll be broadcasting CNN's coverage of the election results live on our two LED screens along Las Vegas Boulevard. They are the biggest TV's you'll ever see.
Chicken Soup for the Soul Day - November 12
I have never read any of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, so I will be celebrating this day by eating chicken noodle soup. This will help keep me healthy, too (my grandmother always told me chicken noodle soup cures everything from colds to broken hearts). PBR Rock Bar & Grill has some of the yummiest soup around.
Button Day - November 16
Miracle Mile Shops' stores have been observing this day since they opened their doors. Every store carries clothes with buttons on them! I am going to use this day as an excuse to buy new clothes. What, it's not my fault it's a holiday!
National Cashew Day - November 23
We have a brand new store at Miracle Mile Shops that if you haven't visited yet, come by on the 23rd (actually, once I tell you who it is you may want to come sooner). Garrett Popcorn Shops, the famous popcorn store out of Chicago, opened their first Las Vegas location here and they have the yummiest Cashew CaramelCrisp popcorn. They have lots of other delicious flavors if that doesn't sound good to you (although I can't imagine why it wouldn't).
National Parfait Day - November 25
I'm not a big breakfast eater - I don't like eggs, which seems to be a staple on all breakfast menus. However, restaurants have added a dish that I think is made just for ... layers of yogurt, granola and fruit... oh my! As much as I like parfaits I don't know that they need an entire official day, but since it's there, I'll go ahead and eat one.
Layered cups of yumminess can be found at: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Jamba, PBR Rock Bar & Grill, Red Mango Yogurt & Smoothies
National Cake Day - November 26
When I said I didn't like eggs above, I failed to mention that if they are hidden in a cake, I don't mind eating them at all. And since it's a national holiday, it would be un-American for me not to have cake on the 26th, right?
Get your cake on!: Strawberry Shortcake at PBR Rock Bar & Grill, cake batter frozen yogurt at Red Mango Yogurt & Smoothies, cupcakes at Sugar Factory. You can even get birthday cake soap at Basin White, Philosophy birthday cake shower gel at Sephora and frosted cupcake candles at Bath & Body Works.
